Our Star Team
Dr. Rachelle Shaw
There's no place I'd rather be than here! I've been practicing pediatric dentistry for more than thirty years and I'm still excited to come to the office each morning. Magic happens here as we guide children and their parents down the road to good dental health.
At the age of sixteen, I first dreamed of becoming a children's dentist. My journey began at Indiana University, where I earned a B.A. with honors in mathematics. Next I attended Indiana University School of Dentistry for four years, earning my doctorate. I completed a two-year hospital residency in pediatric dentistry at the Children's Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. I began practicing pedodontics in Albuquerque in 1982.
By attending the Annual Session of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, I learn the latest in pediatric dentistry. Every morning, on the way to my office, I listen to updates on pediatric dentistry. It's exciting to arrive at the office and to put my new knowledge into practice. I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, New Mexico Dental Association, Albuquerque District Dental Society, the medical staff of Presbyterian Hospital, and the Alpha Omega International Dental Foundation.
I consider the education of our children to be of the highest priority. Accordingly, I contribute to Albuquerque Public Schools, Special Education of New Mexico, Albuquerque Academy, Sandia Prep, Bosque School, Solomon Schechter Day School, Manzano Day School, Sunset Mesa Schools, Emory University, Bard College, New York University, Arizona State University, Indiana University, Loomis Chaffee School, Brandeis University, and the University of New Mexico. I also support the children of New Mexico by donating to Festival Ballet Albuquerque, New Mexico Ballet Company, JCC, Tourets Society, Albuquerque Youth Symphony, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Public Broadcasting, Autism Society, ADHD Society, Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless, Fusion Theater Company, Jewish Federation of Greater Albuquerque, Congregation B'nai Israel, Humane Society, Lucky Paws, and many youth sports clubs.
I give back to my community by presenting my lecture, "Pediatric Dentistry: Sometimes It's Like Pulling Teeth," to New Mexico's pediatricians, students at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center, and the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital. I also volunteer as a dentist in Israel, where I treat Israeli and Arab children.
My husband, Dan Faber, is a practicing attorney. He specializes in employment law. We have three children, Ari, Levi, and Maya, and a black standard poodle, Zoso. They are the joys of my life, along with my office family and the children I treat.
For several years, Albuquerque's dentists have chosen me as the top pediatric dentist in Albuquerque the Magazine. My most important endorsement, though, is from the families who come to see me. I greatly appreciate your support and confidence. It is a privilege to take care of your children's dental health. My twenty-plus years of support of PBS, including "The Cat in the Hat," "Arthur," "Barney," and "Sid the Science Kid," is my way of saying THANK YOU.
As Dr. Shaw is quick to tell people, I’m her "insurance whiz." It makes me smile when I'm able to help our patients by solving an insurance conundrum. I’ve been with Dr. Shaw since 2005 and LOVE my job because she genuinely cares about all of the children she sees. Helping patients grow up healthy and with a love of dentistry isn’t just a job to her; it’s her passion.
I have my bachelor's degree in psychology and I live in Sandia Park, outside Albuquerque, with my husband, who works at Sandia Labs. We have two dogs, Olive and Biscuit, and two tropical tortoises that we’ve been “pet sitting” for several years. Apparently, Bailey and Theo are here to stay!
You can read about my own dentistry adventures on my blog. Be sure to check out the Before and After photos of my teeth. If it weren't for Dr. Shaw, I would still be embarrassed by my smile. I wish Dr. Shaw could have been my dentist when I was growing up!
Come visit our office and I’ll be one of the first people you meet, greeting you with a smile. I enjoy getting to know our patients and their families, helping children learn about dentistry, and watching them grow over the years. I admire Dr. Shaw's dedication to pediatric dentistry and her generous heart. Watching how well children respond to her is always amazing. She is kind to her team and always makes us laugh. I’ve been working for ABQ Pediatric Dentistry since 2009 as Dr. Shaw’s administrative assistant.
I am a mom to one, step-mom to 4, sister to 8, and an aunt to a whopping 30 kids. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, entertaining, and giving back to my community through Beta Sigma Phi. I recently became a “mimi” to 2 adorable grandbabies (1 more on the way!) and have been loving every minute of it. Whenever a friend or family member needs a dentist for their child, I am quick to recommend Dr. Shaw as the best pediatric dentist in Albuquerque. With her caring demeanor, I would insist they see her even if I didn't work here!
I've been a certified dental assistant for more than 45 years and I still love what I do. Children who come in for the first time feeling anxious actually look forward to coming back for future checkups. It’s so rewarding! I give parents helpful information about brushing, flossing, diet, and how to take care of their children’s teeth. I want everyone to have a pleasant dental experience. I love working for Dr. Shaw and have been with her since 2005.
Outside the office, I enjoy being with my three grown children and thirteen grandchildren. No rocking chairs or needlepoint for this grandma though - I’ve won medals for target shooting in the Senior Olympics! From Minnesota originally, I am happy to call Albuquerque my home sweet home. Our beautiful sky is a daily source of inspiration, with its pink sunrises and glowing amber sunsets. I also enjoy the many restaurant choices here, with Weck's being one of my favorites.
If your child plays a musical instrument, you'll probably run into me at APS band concerts. Our children here are so talented! I am blown away at every event.
What I enjoy most about working as a dental assistant for ABQ Pediatric Dentistry is that Dr. Shaw is constantly challenging us to strive for higher standards, which results in learning new things every day. A close second favorite? Being entertained by little comedians while I polish their teeth! My job is to help keep kids healthy and it makes me happy to know they are receiving the best possible care.
On my days off, I take full advantage of the easy access to the natural habitats all around us here in New Mexico by hiking, camping, and fishing. When I’m at home, I love browsing Pinterest for new recipes to cook and, most of all, spoiling my cat, Lana. I am also a UNM student preparing for dental school. I have learned so many things from Dr. Shaw that will help my patients in my own dental practice one day, such as tips for helping anxious patients feel welcome. I expect that dental school will teach me the technical side of dentistry but that I've learned one of the most important skills, a bedside manner that make patients comfortable, right here.
Tonya has recently retired. We are grateful for the care she showed to our patients and wish her the best!
I love the dental field and working with children, especially now that my kids are older. It’s awesome that I’ve found a job where I get to do both! Dr. Shaw has created a comfortable, inviting office and I think the patients feel that from the moment they walk through our door. I've noticed that when I visit a doctor here in Albuquerque, it sometimes seems like the staff doesn't care whether I'm there or not. You will never experience that at Dr. Shaw's office. Everyone here loves their job and loves our patients. When we smile at you and your children, it is because we are all genuinely happy to see you.
I’ve been a certified dental assistant for many years and recently moved to Albuquerque. My husband and I enjoy exploring our new city, especially the endless restaurant choices and endless green chile. Who’d have guessed there could be so many options for brunch? Have you tried Scalo? Yum!
I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in psychology, Spanish and chemistry at the University of New Mexico and will be applying to dental school. I have loved dentistry since I was a freshman in high school and have aspired to work in the dental field ever since. I am a member of the Pre-Dental Society at UNM and the women’s fraternity of Kappa Kappa Gamma; both of which I love!
I’m a people person, so my job here is extremely rewarding! Dr. Shaw’s office has become such a positive part of my life and I appreciate coming to work and connecting with patients and families while learning more about dentistry and what it entails. I strive to give kids a great experience at our office and work diligently to ensure they look forward to their next visit! Albuquerque is such a neat place to live. The people here are friendly and there are so many fun things to do. We have a top-notch zoo, museums for every interest, and I love to root for our Albuquerque Isotopes.
